Election of Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860. He campaigned as anti-slavery. Lincoln was against three main things: states having more power than the nation; slavery, because he thought it was wrong but didn't believe that blacks would be excepted as whites were; and war he was strongly against it but would fight if he had no other choice. He promised that he would not take away existing slaves from slave owners but he wouldn't let slavery expand. He was voted on by all the free states and none of the slave states. Immediately after the election the southern states began to secede because they felt that they had no other option but to leave the union. South Carolina is the first to leave.
