Some BackgroundHe was from the North (Ohio). He would smoke cigars and was a hard-drinker. He eventually tried farming, but failed. His father made him go to college at West Point. He was scored less than stellar and was ranked 21 of 39 in his class. While he went to Went Point the senator that signed his papers spelled his first name wrong and he kept the new
one (U.S. Grant). He fought in the Mexican-American War in the 1840's. He later left the army because he was scared he would get taken out for his drinking habits. |
AFTER the north and south split
After the North and South split he volunteered in 1861 to join the Union (North.) He then quickly gets promoted to a Brigadier General(above colonel and below major general.) People give him the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant because if you were to surrender to him you would be taken prisoner or else die. He gave no conditions. He mostly fought west of the Mississippi River. He also fought in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The battle lasted 40 days until the South surrendered. He was promoted to General Chief after.
